How To Use This Resource
Click on the tabs above to learn more about the many areas of the art of film making, the key roles and activities, and how they work and collaborate to complete the film.
We have included videos of some of our event guest speakers where they talk about specific aspects of film making drawn from their own film making experience. We also reference others from film industry where relevant. Note this is not an exhaustive resource, but deesigned to help you understand the process, structure, skills and art behind making a film.

Stages Of Production
For those of you just starting out on your film making journey, here are the basic building blocks needed to make anything from the most basic of films to the most complex.
Short Film production will tend to follow the stages below, often submitting to film festivals for up to a year before making the film generally available to watch, but the exact route and wther or not to follow a film festival route is entirely up to the film's Producer.

Feature Films will generally follow this path, but may divide individual scenes or shoot scheules in to mini-production cycles, undertaking pre-production through to initial post-production in stages in order to accomodate cast & crew availability, budgets and locations. The Producer works closely with the Director and Heads of Department to determine the shoot and production schedule.

For all types of film making the Producer is normally the first person to be hired or initiate the Production, and the last person with responsibility to close the Production at the end.
